Overhead Line Engineering Experience

Transmission lines are an essential part of meeting the growing demand for electricity, improving grid reliability, and in the connection of new sources of generation.

Overhead lines are the most widely used and economic solution for bulk power transmission and distribution and offer several advantages over buried cables, making them the preferred choice for long distance power transmission. The selection of voltage, conductor type, structure type and configuration, and construction methods, depends on route length, electrical load and system characteristic, terrain, environmental factors and maintenance requirements.

Transmission of electrical power is more efficient at higher voltage due to the reduced equivalent current and minimisation of conductor heating losses. Furthermore, the losses in HVDC transmission lines are significantly lower compared with the equivalent HVAC line often making them better suited for long distances. HVDC lines require fewer conductors and smaller electrical clearances resulting in more compact towers and a narrower Right of Way (ROW).

The choice of technology and configuration depends on a multitude of technical factors and project economics.

Amplitude’s team of engineering specialists have the skills and experience including electrical and structure expertise to assist our clients in evaluating the right technologies, line routes and configurations to establish project feasibility and in supporting our clients throughout the procurement and vendor/contractor selection process, detailed design, installation, and commissioning phases of the project.
